Improving Water Quality

Healthy waterways, thriving farms - learn how practical actions can make the difference.

Join us on-farm with hosts, Aaron and Jo Passey, to hear how they’re improving water quality and helping their farm ecosystem to thrive.

DairyNZ Senior Environmental Specialist Adam Duker will share practical actions you can take to improve on-farm water quality, and the difference these make to in-stream species.

At this Progressing Dairy Event you’ll hear more about:

  • How restorative actions and mitigative strategies work together to protect and enhance the habitat of your farm waterways.
  • How effective planting — the right species in the right place — improves stream health by stabilising banks, filtering runoff, providing shade, and supporting biodiversity.
  • The role catchment groups play in providing a platform for sharing knowledge, adopting good management practices, and addressing local challenges related to water quality.
  • Understanding the land–water connection: managing sensitive areas for better water quality outcomes.

Growing Farm Efficiency and Profit

Hear from local farmers on how they are improving profitability and environmental impact at this DairyNZ event with Fonterra.

Craig & Kelsey Zydenbos are focused on farming profitably while managing a low environmental impact.
Join us on-farm to hear what levers they are pulling to do this – including what’s working, what they would do differently, and what they have planned for the seasons ahead.

Building on this, Bernardo Balladares, Sustainable Dairying Specialist, from Fonterra, will discuss what the regional and national data is telling us about the link between profit and emissions intensity, and how to get the best from your Farm Insights Report (FIR) to support decision-making on your farm.

At this Progressing Dairy Event you’ll hear more about:

Using your farm’s physical and financial data to identify opportunities to improve key profit and environmental metrics.
How growing and utilising quality pasture and crop on farm is essential to a profitable and resilient farm system.
Optimising herd performance throughout the season to improve cow health, reproductive performance, and milksolids production.
The impact of imported supplementary feed on your farm’s emissions and profitability, including utilisation and milk response.

DairyNZ tools to assist with this topic includePasture and Crop Eaten Calculator, Supplement Price Calculator, FeedChecker.

If you're a Fonterra farmer, bring your FIR with you to look through and check out the Fonterra Emissions Scenario Calculator.

Field day - Building Your Future Farm - Patea

Join us to visit Thomas and Courtney Werder’s 110 ha farm where they milk 280 cows in a simple system focusing on pasture, homegrown feed and infrastructure that meets their business and personal goals. Thomas isn’t afraid of trying new ideas but is also quick to ditch the ones that don’t work! Also:

Using genetics to create your best herd

In this practical session Brent Espin, Carrfields, and LIC will demonstrate how you can assess your stock’s TOP characteristics and combine them with the key breeding indexes to build a high value herd. Thomas has bred bulls which have joined the RAS list, he and LIC will describe how he accomplished this.

Transitioning to the next generation

The Werders have prioritised the involvement of all of their family while taking over the ownership of their family farm. Their succession process has focussed on creating opportunities for current and future generations while also looking after the previous generation. Brett Robinson, Rural Coach, will take you through when and how to start your succession journey, thinking about your goals and values, and who can support you to make the right decisions for your family and business.

Making the most of every ha

Thomas and Courtney have planted most of their gullies in either pines or native bush. Many farmers in Taranaki have similar planted areas, but is it feasible to gain financially from them? Graham Smith, dairy farmer and NZ Farm Forestry member, has successfully gained carbon credits and cash return for areas of his farm, he will explain the process and how he achieved it.

Improving Water Quality

Healthy waterways, thriving farms - learn how practical actions can make the difference.

Join us on-farm with host, Hayden Fletcher, Operations Manager for Craigmore Sustainables Farming, to hear how they’re using wetlands to improve water quality and reduce nitrogen loss to groundwater.

Craigmore is focused on innovative ways to improve water use efficiency and manage local impacts on water quality. Nitrogen loss below the root zone is a key measure they use to track performance.

Working with Amuri Irrigation Company, Craigmore has extended its waterway preservation programme, including a newly constructed wetland at Landsend Farm and a bioreactor at Riverend Farm, both near Culverden.

DairyNZ Environment Team Manager, Justin Kitto, will share practical actions you can take to improve on-farm water quality, and the contribution these can make to reduce nitrogen losses.

We’ll also hear from Amuri Irrigation Company about how they work with shareholders to improve biodiversity, water quality, and community value in the Amuri Basin.

At this Progressing Dairy Event you’ll hear more about:

  • Using natural and historical farm features to restore wetlands and reduce surplus nitrogen.
  • Understanding the land–water connection to improve water quality outcomes
  • The role of catchment groups in sharing knowledge, adopting good management practices, and tackling local challenges.
  • How effective planting improves stream health and supports biodiversity.

Join farmers and experts at DairyNZ’s Progressing Dairy Events to share what’s working - and why – so we all get a little better every season.

Technology for Future-Fit Farming

Make smarter, data-driven decisions on-farm

Join Rhys Darby on farm to hear about the impact of implementing wearable technology for their herd.
The Darby’-s use Allflex collars to support the farm team with monitoring herd health and heat detection, with other technology such as pasture.io to support decision making for grazing management

A DairyNZ expert will talk to the research on the impact of wearables on reproductive performance, as well as how rumination data can play a role in decision-making for monitoring cow health and feed requirements.

At this Progressing Dairy Event, find out more about:

  • How to interpret and use wearable data effectively.
  • Explore options for cost effective and fit-for-purpose technology on your farm.
  • Learn how wearables can improve efficiency and reduce labour needs.

Take the opportunity to hear how farmers are using wearable tech and discover what could work best for your farm.

Improving Water Quality

Healthy waterways, thriving farms - learn how practical actions can make the difference.

Join us on-farm with hosts, Bush Mackay, alongside sharemilker, Andrew Mcpherson, to hear how they’re improving water quality and helping native species to thrive, including planted over 15,000 native trees, fenced waterways, and created a duck pond surrounded by planting to improve biodiversity and water quality. They’ve also retired land from farming and joined the Taiea te Taiao ecological corridor project, which links Maungatautari and Mt Pirongia by restoring wetlands and planting along the Mangapiko Stream. These efforts protect waterways, support native wildlife, and show that environmental care can go hand-in-hand with farm productivity

DairyNZ Principal scientist, Craig Depree, will share practical actions you can take to improve on-farm water quality, and the difference these make to in-stream species. We’ll hear from Mangapiko Catchment Group on how they’re working together to improve biodiversity, water quality, and community value in Waipa district.

Join farmers and experts at DairyNZ’s Progressing Dairy Events to share what’s working - and why – so we all get a little better every season.

Improving Water Quality

Healthy waterways, thriving farms - learn how practical actions can make the difference.
